Prince of Peace - Carols by Candlelight 2011

Jesus came to fulfil the promise made in Isaiah that the Messiah would be the Prince of Peace.  There is no peace in the world or in our hearts because we are not at peace with God.  Jesus' mission was to reconcile us to God by his death on the Cross so we have the basis for peace with God, and with ourselves and others.  Although we do not see perfect peace now, his mission was successful.  We can have peace with God now and the promise that one day all who know him will be at peace.

God with us – Family Carol Service 2011

The birth of Jesus is the fulfilment of the promise of Isaiah 9 that the Messiah will be God with us.

God with us in Jesus means that he shows us completely what we need to know about God, he shares our humanity, he demonstrates that he cares for us and that he knows all about our life experiences.

Hebrews 12:14 to 29: Warning - do not refuse God

Keeping going in the Christian life is a personal choice but it’s also a community responsibility. Together we spur one another on, and together we try to root out bitterness or disharmony. We are to strive for peace and holiness all the time, remembering that we came to the heavenly mountain not the earthly fearful one that the Israelites hardly dared approach. Here we worship God with confidence but at the same time with reverence and awe.

John 16:5 to 16 - The Spirit's work

What does the Holy Spirit do in the world and in the church? In John 16 Jesus explains that when he departs the Holy Spirit comes bringing conviction to the world about their sin in rejecting Jesus, of the perfect righteousness in Jesus and the reality of judgment.

The Holy Spirit will also guide first the disciples, and then through them, the church into all truth about Jesus in the past present and future, always with the spotlight on Jesus, and in that way bringing glory to God the Father.

John 15:1 to 17 - The Vine and the Branches

Jesus is giving leaving instructions to his anxious disciples. How do they know they are safe?
How do you know that you're doing the right thing following Jesus?

This text tells us that Jesus is the true vine - the Israel that Israel never was.

If you are in Christ you are completely safe, and you will be fruitful and joyful, knowing and expressing the obedient love and power of Christ.

But if you're just religious, even church-going and seemingly Christian, but don't really connect in faith and trust to the real Jesus Christ through his word, you are not safe, and in the end there will not be fruit.

Hebrews 11:23-40 – Persistent Faith

What difference will it make to your choices and your actions if you really believe God exists, and that he will he will keep all his promises to save and to bless. This tremendous chapter comes to a crescendo with a roll call of ordinary heroes of faith who through triumphs and trials demonstrated faith in the promises of God.

John 14:15-31 - The Counsellor

Jesus is about to leave his disciples but can truly say that things will be even better for them and for the world because he will send “another Counsellor” so the Father and the Son will dwell with believers, teaching then and giving the peace of Christ.

John 14:5 to 14 - I am the Way

Wouldn’t it be great if we could all know God? If there were no mysteries or guesswork.  Wouldn’t it be amazing if there was a way to know God and to be with him forever and to know his power in our lives?

Jesus says there is, and it’s Him.  He’s the way, and He gives the power.  The disciples were really struggling to understand this, even though they had Jesus with them.  They’re not the only ones.

Hebrews 11:1 to 7 - Faith in the unseen

Is faith a tenacious belief in something against all reason?  No, but it is the belief in something you have not known in your own experience.  Even the disciples had to exercise faith – they saw the miracles, even the resurrection, but  they needed to see beyond that to the unseen reality of God behind all these events.

For the readers of the letter to Hebrews, and for us, we need to see the necessity of faith in an unseen God who nonetheless truly exists and rewards those who seek him.

In the first of the sermons from Hebrews 11 we see the definition of faith and then three examples – Abel, Enoch and Noah.

John 13:31 to 14:4 – Jesus’ Going

Jesus was soon to die on the Cross.  He tells his disciples they must display a distinctive kind of love, modelled on his example and following his teaching.  This will be a powerful example to the world around them.

Peter believes he can be a saviour for Jesus rather than the other way around.  We sometimes think we can save ourselves. Peter needed Jesus to go (to the Cross) to prepare a way for them.  He needed to trust in God rather than himself. So do we.

Hebrews 10:26 to 39 - Persistent Faith

Why do people give up following Jesus?  It must be that they no longer think he’s important.  It might be because something’s happened in their lives that they blame God for.  It might just be other things seem a lot more interesting or beneficial.

In this text we see the Consequence of Persistent Sin. If you turn your back on Jesus, the only thing that can lead to is Judgment. But we also see the Reward for Persistent Faith. Jesus will come back to judge and save.

John 13:1 to 30 - What's in the picture?

Jesus washing the disciples feet is a beautiful picture, but what does God want us to see in the picture? We need to think about the context – the imminent death of Jesus; the love of Jesus and the sovereignty of Jesus.

Then we can see that the washing was a demonstration of what was going to happen at the Cross. The Cross would be a sovereign display of power in weakness; a sovereign sacrifice that cleanses completely; and a sovereign example for disciples to follow.

John 12:37 to 50 - Jewish Unbelief

Why didn’t many Jews believe Jesus? They had many convincing signs right in front of their eyes. Some did believe, even amongst the leaders. But many did not.

Yesterday we looked at John’s explanation. He shows us about God’s promises and God’s purposes. The Jews rejected Jesus in the same way they always seemed to ignore the prophets in the Old Testament. And God eventually confirms them in their unbelief. But this is not a failure of God’s plan, it is in fact the way God chooses to work and to catapult the gospel to all the nations.

So what do we need to do? Listen to the appeal of Jesus; follow Him and to be sure of eternal life.

Hebrews 10:19 to 25 – Jesus, the willing servant

What keeps us going as believers? What keeps us going through trials, through persecution, through just the every day toil and grind of life? What keeps us believing, keeps us trusting? Last night as we continued our studies in Hebrews the writer of Hebrews in chp 10:19-25 gave us three encouragements to how to keep going. Firstly we are to continue to draw near to God. As believers in Jesus we can keep on drawing near, not because we deserve to, not because we earn’t it but because of Jesus’ once for all sacrifice. His sacrifice has opened the way for us to enter the Most Holy Place. Not the earthly most holy of holies but the heavenly most holy of Holies, the very throne room of God. As such the writer says because we can confidently enter the very presence of God without fear of death. We are to draw near to God and we are to continually draw near. We do this predominately through prayer but also by spending time with God, enjoying intimacy with Him, reading his word, praising Him, revelling in His grace, deepening my love and understanding of Him. So the first way we are to keep going is to draw near to God. The second way is to continue to hold unswervingly to the hope we profess. We are to cling onto the hope of Heaven. It is this hope that will stop us from swerving to avoid persecution or giving up because of the monotony of life. We need to keep reminding our selves of the great hope in order to keep going. Then thirdly we keep going by considering others, by spending time with other believers. In other words we need to be those who are committed to our church families, this will mean attending regularly at church meetings on a Sunday, midweek. The writer says we are to keep on meeting together because we need one another, to spur one another on, particular in light of the fact that judgment is coming. I take it he tells us to do this so that we will all be standing firm on that day, safe and secure in Jesus. If you want to keep going then follow the Writer to the Hebrews clear commands.

Hebrews 10:1 to 18 – Jesus, the willing servant

God was speaking throughout the Bible, leading us to Christ. In the Old Testament we have the shadow but in Jesus we have the reality. A man who really did fulfil the law completely and offered himself unreservedly to God. That’s why Jesus is now at the place of honour in heaven, waiting for the end of all things when He will return and judge all men.

John 12:37 to 50 - Jewish Unbelief

Are you devoted to Jesus. Do you love Him? Are you extravagant in your worship and recognise His value? Do you want to worship him more than material things and more than being religious?

But Jesus is not a king on your terms. He is a victorious king who wins a great victory but He comes to bring peace, by His blood shed for sinners. Do you want Him as your servant or you master?

John in his gospel teaches about expressing our devotion and seeing clearly the kind of King Jesus is.

Hebrews 8:1 to 13 - Jesus, Priest of the New Covenant

What do we need to have a direct relationship with God? The Lord Jesus Christ, our great High Priest, presented a better sacrifice and ministry than any other in the past, in order to bring us to God. He is sitting at God’s right hand in glory because he offered the perfect sacrifice. He is mediator of the New Covenant, which has replaced the Old Covenant under which we were condemned. Under this New Covenant, we are given a new nature as God works in us, a new identity as his people and the forgiveness of sins through the perfect sacrifice of our great High Priest.

Hebrews 7:1 to 28 – Jesus, the eternal high priest

There is not a moment or a day that goes by when Jesus does not stand in our place, representing us to God. Jesus is better than the Old Testament priests because He lives forever, he can intercedes for us and he really does meet our needs because He was the perfect sacrifice – once for all.

All Age - the voice of love and power

We have an illness that is fatal and incurable. It separates us from God and from other people and will overwhelm us. The illness is our sin – we don’t want to worship God and we don’t want to serve Him. Our biggest problem is not a lack of self-esteem or false guilt. Our biggest problem is that God is not our friend.

Jesus meets a leper and showed that he is willing and able to help him. He cures the leper and gives a great picture of what he can do for us. Jesus connected with our world. Jesus can help you

1 Peter has been about being strangers in the world, living disctinctive lives by submitting to all authorities, experiencing at times suffering in all it's forms and in this way being sanctified (made holy). All this following the example of Christ

Peter ends by reminding them that they are in a spiritual battle with the devil but secure in Christ - they stand firm by trusting the power and the grace of God.

1 Peter 5:1 to 7 - Stress Free Leadership

Jesus Christ is the Great Shepherd who entrusts the leadership of the church to under- shepherds, or elders, who are called to do their job willingly and diligently with a supportive church in an atmosphere of humility

Elders are called to lead as shepherds would – not grudgingly but willingly, not greedily but eagerly and not in a domineering way but through example

All, but particularly young people are called to respect the leadership structures God has put in place

Everyone is called to be humble but at the same time encouraged that we can cast all our cares on Jesus because he really does care for us.

1 Peter 3:1 to 7 - Happy Homes

With marriage in decline in the UK, and divorce rates rising, is there a recipe for happy homes?

In Peter’s letter to the early Christians he lays out God’s order in marriage. The general message in society today is about putting self first, ensuring my happiness and satisfaction in life.

The Christian in desiring to follow Jesus first, put’s him first, others next and self last. God’s recipe for a successful and happy marriage follows that pattern: The wife submitting to God first, her husband next and considering her own self last. The husband, with God given authority as head of the marriage, puts God first, the needs of his wife second and himself last.

A counter cultural message!

Hebrews 3:7-19 - Warning: Don't Harden Your Heart

There is a danger, even for people who have experienced to some degree the salvation from God, that as life goes on they stop believing, or perhaps more correctly, it becomes clear they were never really trusting God’s word first place.
It’s just what happened to God’s people in the Old Testament. They were saved from slavery but they stopped really trusting the word of God.
We need to watch out for ourselves and for others, encouraging us all to make sure we don’t do the same.

All-Age - God knows everything

At our all age service we looked at two more basic questions about God:
Can you see God?No, I cannot see God, but he always sees me
Does God know all things?
Yes, nothing can be hidden from God

We thought about the extent of the knowledge of God that it was comprehensive and did not require any learning on God’s part. It means he knows us completely, which in some ways is a great comfort but in other ways it frightens us. God knows all our secrets.
Thank God that knowing us, he still sent His one and only Son to die for people just like us so that we can know him, and spend our lives and eternity getting to know him better.

Acts 2:1-42 Jesus, you crucified, God raised, we are witnesses

In Acts 2 the fact of Jesus Christ being a real person who performed great miracles was undisputed. Also, the fact that Jesus died by being crucified by the Roman soldiers was accepted.

Hebrews 3:1-6 Jesus, the builder of the house

Moses was great. Jesus was greater.

Moses was a faithful servant in God's house, but Jesus makes the house.

Just as the designer deserves much more recognition that the thing they designed so Jesus deserves the glory for being the architect of the church.

Moses was part of the building (the people of God). Jesus was the maker of the building

So, Christians then and now need to fix their thoughts on Jesus. To be courageous and bold and show they are part of the great building that brings Christ honour

For our thanksgiving service as we moved into our new building we thought about - what is the church and why is it here?

He makes the building possible and he defines the shape of the building.

2. Christ's church is there for Worship and Witness

Hebrews 2:5-18 Jesus redeems humanity

Buy one get one free… good.

Fat free…good (apart from perhaps the taste)

But what are Christians talking about when they talk about being set free?

Freedom from what?

How are not free?

The writer of Hebrews continues in his flow, focussing his readers attention on the deity of Jesus Christ, to talk about the astonishing reality of the complete humanity of Christ!

We can see, as the writer transitions from the highest of heights of the glory of the eternal Son, to the humility as he became fully human, to set us free from the fear of death.

We see the incredible association Jesus makes with his brothers, as He takes on the role of the perfect pioneer, and the perfect high priest and all as the perfect man!
